50/30/20 rule of thumb

Your fixed expenses are counted as needs, your variable expenses as wants. That is our simple matching, not a rule. A rule of thumb is a starting point, not advice.

Plan one paycheck at a time
A paycheck budget answers one question: after the bills due before my next paycheck and the other spending I expect, how much of this paycheck is left? Enter the paycheck, the bills that must be paid before the next one, and what else you expect to spend. The sum is shown in full.
Left from this paycheck = paycheck − bills due − other spending − set aside
Example with made-up numbers: $2,000 − $1,100 − $450 = $450.
Which bills go on which paycheck?
Look at the due dates on your bills and put each one on the last paycheck that arrives before it is due. A bill due on the 5th belongs to the paycheck you get before the 5th, not after. Then do one calculation per paycheck.
Biweekly pay and months with three paychecks
If you are paid every two weeks, you get 26 paychecks in a typical year, while 12 months of two paychecks would be 24. The difference means that in some months you get three. Do the third paycheck as its own calculation; this page does not assume what you will do with it.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make a paycheck budget?
Take one paycheck, list the bills due before the next one, add the other spending you expect, and subtract. What is left is what you have not planned to spend from that paycheck.
Can I use it for biweekly pay?
Yes. Make one calculation per paycheck. A biweekly schedule gives 26 paychecks in a typical year, so some months have three, and you can calculate those separately.
Can I use it for weekly or semi-monthly pay?
Yes. The tool does not care how often you are paid. It subtracts what you enter from the paycheck amount you enter.
Can I save my paycheck budget?
Yes, if you press “Save in this browser.” It is stored on this device only. You can also download a CSV or print the page.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. The calculation happens in your browser, and nothing is sent to us.
